Working hours:

Evening shift 15.00– 23.00 Monday to Friday per week (37.5 hours)

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: £25,000.00 per year

Role Description:

As the Laboratory Shift Supervisor you will support the Laboratory Manager by providing line management to the Lab Technicians. In addition, you will be an integral part of the Laboratory team and will be expected to produce reliable and accurate data from the urine samples obtained from our donors. You will be expected to schedule and lead laboratory testing on samples as they arrive into the laboratory.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

· Provide first line supervision of the shift of Laboratory Technicians

· Manage the laboratory shift activities with direction from the Laboratory Manager and the Director of Microbiology

· Ensure all Health & Safety requirements are met within the lab

· Adhere to the quality systems set out in the laboratory SOPs

· Generation of data using specific techniques and strict protocols to support scientific investigations

  • Ensure samples are accurately analysed and reported in the required timeframe
  • Perform scheduled regulatory checks and maintain appropriate accurate records

· Assist in preparation of laboratory procedures, audits, calibrations, etc.

· Author and review of laboratory documentation in accordance with requirements of the QMS

· Train and mentor Laboratory Technicians in laboratory SOP’s and other laboratory procedures

· Ensure all laboratory supplies are adequately stocked and raise purchase requests as appropriate to re-order

· Review and analyse laboratory data which will form the basis of laboratory reports

· Produce daily shift progress reports for the Laboratory Manager and Director of Microbiology

· Set up and undertake controlled experiments

· Recording of scientific results analytically, accurately and contemporaneously

· Participation in promotional and educational activities

· Any other duties as required for the role

Candidate Profile:


· Experience managing a small team of Laboratory Technicians or Scientists

· Candidates should be educated to a degree level, or equivalent in microbiology or a related science subject or have 2-3 years’ experience within a microbiology laboratory

· Theoretical and practical knowledge of microbiology analysis across a range of microbiological procedures is required together with a good understanding of quality systems

· Knowledge and experience working within a multi-skilled laboratory

· Experience of preparation of biological samples for testing as appropriate

· Ability to assess whether samples meet laboratory standards and document any quality issues and ensure materials are properly disposed of

· Ability to review and report results in a timely manner including results that require further investigation

· Detail oriented: should be efficient, motivated and pay close attention to detail

· Demonstrate ability to problem solve

· Experience of working within Biosafety Level II environment and able to follow strict safety guidelines

· Demonstrate competency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

· Proven experience training staff members in microbiological techniques and protocols

· Good communication skills

· Ability to work under pressure while keeping a positive attitude

· The desire to learn new skills and adaptability in what can be a fast-paced environment

· Good team player however lone working may also be required
